The conference was a huge success with over 350 members in attendance. Michelle Stuart's seminar on Internet profiling offered many practical strategies in using the web to locate and identify and Kevin Ripa's breakout on defending child pornography cases showed that the State doesn't always hold all the cards.
Aside from the training, one of the highlights is an affair known as the "President's Reception". Every year, NDIA holds a buffet dinner and presents awards for Investigator of the Year and Paralegal of the Year. Additionaly, prizes are either raffled or auctioned off to raise money for a charitable cause.
This year, the dinner guests dug deep to raise $3,100 for the young son of a federal defender investigator from Texas. The seven year old has an inoperable brain tumor and, as of last week, the prognosis was not good. Hopefully the money will help to defray some of the family's expenses during the boy's final days.
San Diego is the next venue for the regional conference in September. Mark your calendars for this one!
